100 Comics Positives For 2013: Fiona Staples, Superstar

image

We got into a weird place for a while there with comics writers where they got an enormous amount of praise ahead of the artists with whom they co-authored comics. I don't know why this is. It might have been push back against the Image Era of the early '90s. It might be because writers can handle more books for the big companies and provide greater continuity for hits. It might be that the people assessing the value of these comics are writers themselves. Couldn't tell you. The point is I'm happy that as Saga has become a big hit that Fiona Staples has been able to enjoy in much of the credit -- I think that book really depends on what she does visually. I'm encouraged that she's becoming a "get" for comics conventions, too, one of the other modest but important things that the comics community can do to indicate someone's work has unique value. It all counts.
