100 Comics Positives For 2013: Oh, By The Way, Greatest Year For Alt- And Arts-Manga Maybe Ever

About October or November, the critics of my acquaintance began to ask each other if this was the best year for alt- and art- manga in English translation that we've ever seen. I don't know enough about manga to make that call, but there was certain an astonishing run of books from Japan distinguished less by their execution within the expectations of genre than their general expressive, even literary qualities. This includes the above work, one of the last books from PictureBox, the Ryan Holmberg books from that same publisher, the Panorama Island work finally out from Last Gasp and an array of titles from places like Drawn and Quarterly and Vertical. It was a wonderful year for such comics, and comics in general for whatever factors led to this wave of publication.
