Bangladeshi Cartoonist Being Detained For Creation Of Blasphemous Caricature
Reporters San Frontieres
has called on the Bangladesh government to release cartoonist Arifur Rahman, currently being detained by for a cartoon in a satirical weekly featuring a boy adding the name Muhammed to the name of a cat. An order for his arrest
had been issued early yesterday. Nearly 3000 people protested the cartoon on the streets of Dhaka earlier today. Bangladesh is the world's third-most populous Muslim nation, and this story is being interpreted as both an example of worldwide intolerance against visual satire involving Muhammed and as one of a growing number of distressing incidents regarding the current Bangladeshi government.
