Conversational Euro-Comics is the catch-all column covering Bart Beaty's interactions with European comics -- their best works, their most creative artists and their most popular festivals. We are honored to run it on The Comics Reporter.
Dr. Beaty is a former columnist at The Comics Journal and a professor at the University of Calgary. He has written extensively on comics for academia and the mainstream press. Unpopular Culture: Transforming the European Comic Book in the 1990s is his survey of the growth of independent, formally audacious comics publishing houses over the last twenty years. His Fredric Wertham and the Critique of Mass Culture and its sympathetic portrayal of the much-demonized social reformer may be the most controversial book of comics scholarship to be published in the last 20 years. A full bibliography may be found in the initial name link.
Conversational Euro-Comics appears on the occasional Thursday and whenever else Dr. Beaty might see fit to post. He can be reached
