They should move the con to New Jersey. I know some of the creators and other con-goers stayed on this side of the Hudson and commuted back and forth each day. (I did it, using the convenient Weehawken Ferry.) I don't know much about the convention centers over here in NJ, but surely there's one with a less onerous union issue. For those flying in, Newark is just as "convenient" as La Guardia or JFK.
This is not without precedent. Wizard World: Chicago is in Freemont. Wizard World: LA is in somewhere other than the city of angels. (Long Beach? Anaheim? I forget.) Not that the comic convention business should ever aspire to be Wizard, but financially it does make a lot of sense.
