Michael Grabowski On Use Of That Old Sim Portrait From TCJ As Illustrative Art
posted February 20, 2011

Might I suggest that your choice of art to highlight Dave Sim in Brandon Graham's list is loaded to a fault, to say the least? Not so much the portrait as the words accompanying it. Whether the "misogynist" charge in the adjacent words is true, false, or debatable, it is probably distracts from whatever qualities Mr. Graham was thinking of when he chose Sim. According to Sim in one of his old letter columns, Bill Willingham himself has expressed disappointment that The Comics Journal paired up those words with his art. I'm sure part of the problem is that you don't have a photo of Sim, but there has to have been a better solution to the one you chose here.

Tom Spurgeon: Didn't give it two seconds of thought, just liked the portrait, but I changed it. I would like to live in a world where I carefully prepared the Five For Friday results posts to contain messages of varying sorts and that not having a photo of Sim were merely "part of the problem" and the rest was some unnamed, insidious motivation through which I resorted to signal-making and castigation via carefully selected imagery. Alas, I do not live in that world.
