Mykal Banta On The Steve Rude Arrest
posted November 5, 2011
Regarding your Nov. 3rd article in defense of Steve Rude and his recent arrest, I gather from your wildly one-sided description of events that Mr. Rude threatened to kill his neighbors, physically assaulted at least one neighbor, and resisted arrest when the police were summoned. This is a man to whom you wish I should give money?
Mr. Rude, by so many accounts, is a wonderful man at heart, and I appreciate your need to defend him. But to hint broadly that he is perhaps, maybe, a victim of police brutality in this incident ("Rude suffered some physical abuse during the arrest and later at the jail, the latter of which will be looked at by a doctor.") is doing him no favors. Your tissue-thin spin on things, if anything, draws one to far worse conclusions that may be reality. You would serve Mr. Rude far better by the acknowledgement, at the very least, of a colossal mistake in judgment, some absolutely terrible public behavior, and the recognition of an anger problem that needs some immediate attention. Friends don't enable this kind of conduct in friends.
I am very willing to forgive a man mistakes once honestly admitted. I am unwilling, however, to forgive a man who tries to convince me, after this kind of disgraceful conduct (and even by your extremely generous take on things, it was disgraceful) that he is a victim.
I disagree. I'm not looking to serve Steve Rude, but to present as much of his story as I have in as fair a context as possible, in a way that ultimately lets you make the best decision you can. I wasn't trying to hint anything; I was relating Jaynelle's story. If I failed to do so in a way that allowed a full range of ways to process that information, that's on me and I apologize. In general, I'm not going to pass written judgment on someone's behavior outside of comics, whether that's an ugly incident with a neighbor or financial travails or a gossipy divorce. It just not what I do, and it's outside of this site's purview. Also, please know: I don't wish for you or anyone to give Steve Rude money, I only asked that you give it some consideration. I think Steve has the standing in the community that such a request should be heard. Thank you for what sounds like your doing so.
