Creator Struggles, Store Rallies In Tuscaloosa

Word has begun to seep out peer to peer about the effects of last week's terrifying onslaught of tornadoes and bad weather across the south, perhaps most notably in the college town of Tuscaloosa, Alabama. A plea on behalf of Chris "The Woz" Wozniak, a transplanted New Yorker who moved to Tuscaloosa and had a home there with wife Debra, lost that home in the tornado April 27. Debra Wozniak was at work when the tornado hit the house. Chris and two dogs survived what is described as total destruction of home and belongings. The Wozniaks are described as being in desperate need. A paypal button through which one can make donations has been set up here. A television profile was done right after the home's destruction.

Wozniak's credits include short stints on the Marvel series Excalibur and the DC series The Spectre.

Tuscaloosa's Sho'Nuff Comics has been providing updates on its Facebook Wall about its struggle to get back to full operations. "We were extremely lucky," Jon Chandler told CR, "The tornado touched down only three blocks from our store." The store got its power back on Friday, which Chandler called weeks ahead of the multi-week estimate the store was originally given for resumption of service. "We've been able to touch base with about ninety-five percent of our customers and all are fine, but have heard lots of horror stories."

Chandler says Sho'Nuff is folding a charitable effort into this weekend's Free Comic Book Day event. "We are still planning on having FCBD, but we were already teaming with the West Alabama Food Bank to have a canned food drive. Now we are planning to get the word out and make it a bigger part of our day." He says the store is also looking into accepting clothing donation and helping provide space for dislocated animals. We wish them every bit of luck in their work restoring normal business routines and helping to heal the community they serve. As always, depending on your ability to do so, a visit to a trusted local merchant in a time of discombobulation and wider tragedy can be a valued thing.
