I Think I Like It Better With Fewer Librarian-Related Comics News Stories
I suppose there's some novelty in this day and age
that two librarians claim they were fired for not giving an 11-year-old access to a League Of Extraordinary Gentleman volume, but the fishy smells leap off of this thing in a way I can't quite quantify. First, due to library policy we only have the librarians' -- or circulation desk help employees', depending on who's talking -- word for it. Second, while I'm all for a policy that leaves these things in the hands of parents, I know a lot of reasonable people who wouldn't mind having a librarian ask them "are you sure?" when it comes to this sort of thing, so firing someone over it seems sort of harsh to me. Heck, at my first comic shop the owner asked if he could meet my mom just to make sure it was okay with her if I was buying certain kinds of comics -- it didn't seem like an assault on my free speech, although I know the situations are different in ways that count. I don't know -- it feels like there's something remaining here that might emerge later on.
