News: Hirings/Firings: Robert Boyd Out at ADV Manga
posted July 21, 2004
July 21 -- News reached the Journal through industry sources that longtime comics industry editor, marketing, distribution and sales expert Robert Boyd was no longer employed by ADV Manga. Boyd had moved to the publications wing of the Houston-based anime company during the slow dissolution of Tampa, Florida's CrossGen Entertainment where he had been employed. Another CrossGen refugee, Chris Oarr, remains employed by the manga house.
Boyd's lengthy resume includes stints at Fantagraphics Books, Roger Corman's Cosmic Comics, and Kitchen Sink Press. He also published under his own Westhampton Press imprint. Boyd could not be reached for comment.
The Journal learned on July 30 that Josh Ryan, long described as Marvel Entertainment's "West Coast liaison" and a noted new talent recruiter during that company's Bill Jemas era, was leaving effective immediately to pursue other opportunities.
On August 20 Comics Journal contributor and longtime on-line comics commentator Sean T. Collins announced he was taking a position as Assistant Editor for Wizard Publication Inc.'s newly formed Specials division, which handles hardcovers, one-shot movie or character tie-in publications and the annual Wizard Edge magazine for the hyper-successful newsstand hype, hobby and price guide magazine publisher. Collins told the Journal, "I've long had a soft spot in my heart for Wizard, because if it weren't for Wizard I wouldn't be involved in comics." Collins believes his frequent entries at his comics-related web log, now discontinued, have prepared him well for the position at the Congers, New York-based publisher.
