Brief Note: As Far As I Know, The Syrian Cartoonist Ali Ferzat Is In Kuwait Right Now, Not Damascus

imageI get asked about once a day after the safety of Syrian cartoonist and gallery owner Ali Ferzat. Things are horrifying in Syria in several ways right now, and people have wondered after Ferzat's safety both generally and for the fact that in 2011 he was assaulted in an attempt to silence his pen -- part of a campaign of terror against artists that to my understanding has continued.

My understanding is that Ferzat has been in Kuwait for a while now, and that he went there at the behest of his family when things became that much more dangerous in Syria on day-to-day existence level. I think Ferzat would have been welcome in just about any country he chose to set up given the circumstances that led to his specific need for relocation, but to my memory he's also very well-liked regionally and has been for quite some time, making me think he could have gone anywhere he wanted even before he was world news last year. Ferzat made news while in London this year for saying he would definitely return to his country when things allowed, but to the best of my knowledge this hasn't happened yet.
