Brian Pearce on Bob Haney and the Elseworlds 80-Page Giant Issue

You made a reference in the Bob Haney story to that Elseworlds 80-Page Giant -- "I believe the latter had been part of a DC decision to have a comic book issue destroyed before wide release" -- but what actually caused the book to be pulled was a terrific Kyle Baker story, called (I think) "Letitia Lerner, Superman's Babysitter," that had baby Kal-El end up in the microwave at the end of the story. Paul Levitz objected to this as an "imitatable act" (even though this was a humor piece, and the infant had sustained no harm), and had the book pulled from Diamond, though a handful of issues did get as far as Diamond UK. (I suspect pre-orders were low, or DC might have considered going back to press with an altered version.)

The full story is reproduced here, and here. And, of course, it also found a home in the Bizarro Comics anthology -- which was actuallly devised to create a venue to print the story!
