This Isn’t A Library: New And Notable Releases To The Comics Direct Market

Here are the books that make an impression on me staring at this week's largely accurate list of books shipping from Diamond Comic Distributors, Inc. to comic book and hobby shops across North America.

I might not buy all of the works listed here. I might not buy any. But were I in a comic book shop tomorrow I would look deep into their pulpy souls.

AUG090032 LITTLE LULU TP VOL 21 MISS FEENYS FOLLY & STORIES $14.95
I don't follow this series as closely as I should, but I know the comics here and they are good.

AUG090026 MYSPACE DARK HORSE PRESENTS TP VOL 04 $19.95
I kind of lost track of DHC's myspace.com comics efforts at about the time myspace pulled a cultural momentum Titantic, but any comic with Chris Onstad, Farel Dalrymple and Guy Davis in it can't be bad.

AUG090357 KING CITY #3 $2.99
More from Brandon Graham's reformatted into traditional comics form series.

MAY090358 SWORD #20 (MR) $2.99
I've rattled off the virtues of the Luna Brothers before, and I always look forward to reading their comics in serial form.

OCT091116 TEZUKA DORORO GN VOL 01 (O/A) $13.95
OCT091117 TEZUKA DORORO GN VOL 02 (O/A) $13.95
OCT091118 TEZUKA DORORO GN VOL 03 (O/A) $13.95
OCT090878 ACME NOVELTY LIBRARY HC #19 (O/A) (MR) $15.95
OCT091039 ASTERIOS POLYP GN $29.95
AUG090989 BINKY BROWN MEETS THE HOLY VIRGIN MARY GN (MR) $29.00
That is a metric ton of awesome material that is either newly available in a different format or simply being offered again. If you had to choose between buying the brand-new stuff and this stuff, you'd want to buy this stuff.

SEP090565 GLAMOURPUSS #10 $3.00
If anyone was dumb enough to bet against Dave Sim's ability to keep producing a comic book, you might owe some money as the cartoonist is now in double-digits.

MAY090847 POPEYE HC VOL 04 PLUNDER ISLAND $29.99
One of the great comic strips of all time gets into one of its two or three signature sequences.

SEP091034 SLAM DUNK GN VOL 07 $9.99
I'm not feeling any widespread love for this series, although I like it. I think its relatively glacial pacing may have something to do with its inability to break out.

JUL090868 COMICS JOURNAL #300 $14.99
Between this solid issue of inter-generational interviews and the new on-line Journal launching earlier today, I imagine it's a good week to be on Team Journal.

OCT091099 DRAWING BETWEEN LINES SHORT DOCUMENTARY JEFFREY BROWN DVD $15.00
I have little to no idea what this is, but if I were in comics shop that had it I'd find out in a hurray.

The full list of this week's releases, including some titles with multiple cover variations and a long, impressive list of toys and other stuff that isn't comics, can be found here. Despite this official list there's no guarantee a comic will show up in the stores as promised, or in all of the stores as opposed to just a few. Also, stores choose what they carry and don't carry so your shop may not carry a specific publication. There are a lot of comics out there.

To find your local comic book store, check this list; and for one I can personally recommend because I've shopped there, albeit a while back, try this.

The above titles are listed with their Diamond order code in the first field, which may assist you in finding comics at your shop or having them order something for you they don't have in-stock. Ordering through a direct market shop can be a frustrating experience, so if you have a direct line to something -- you know another shop has it, you know a bookstore has it -- I'd urge you to consider all of your options.

If I didn't list your comic here, I'm totally open to being bribed.
