This Isn’t A Library: New And Notable Releases To The Comics Direct Market

Here are the books that make an impression on me staring at this week's largely accurate list of books shipping from Diamond Comic Distributors, Inc. to comic book and hobby shops across North America.

I might not buy all of the works listed here. I might not buy any. But were I in a comic book shop tomorrow I would regard them.

*****

JUL090070 CROSSING EMPTY QUARTER & OTHER STORIES HC $24.95
A welcome collection from the wonderful cartoonist -- there's nobody like her in comics, so please look this one over if you're in the funnybook shop this week.

OCT090042 BPRD WAR ON FROGS #4 (OF 4) $2.99
JUL090388 ASTOUNDING WOLF-MAN #20 $2.99
JUN090390 PHONOGRAM 2 #6 (OF 7) SINGLES CLUB (MR) $3.50
OCT090433 WALKING DEAD #68 (MR) $2.99
A selection of "hit" non-superhero genre comics, including the always welcome Walking Dead, one of the publishing phenomenons of this decade.

SEP091015 DETROIT METAL CITY GN VOL 03 (MR) $12.99
This is the closest thing I read to the gone but not forgotten Cromartie High School, and most people I know like it better than that series.

SEP090710 MUPPET SHOW #0 $2.99
I believe this may be part of the company's series efforts with the Muppets license as opposed to stand-alone mini-series.

OCT090290 DAYTRIPPER #1 (OF 10) (MR) $2.99
I love the hype for this series. I know it doesn't mean to sound like "we'll follow these guys into all manner of personal stuff because they turn out other stuff which is more marketable and yet equally awesome," but that's how I read it.

OCT091169 AZUMANGA DAIOH COLL ED $24.99
OCT091177 YOTSUBA & ! GN VOL 07 $10.99
Two from the very entertaining Kiyohiko Azuma. I'm pretty sure we've seen the first one before, and also pretty sure we haven't seen any of the second listing at all. Could be wrong; still worth having.

OCT091198 ALTER EGO #90 $6.95
Ninety? Whoa.

The full list of this week's releases, including some titles with multiple cover variations and a long, impressive list of toys and other stuff that isn't comics, can be found here. Despite this official list there's no guarantee a comic will show up in the stores as promised, or in all of the stores as opposed to just a few. Also, stores choose what they carry and don't carry so your shop may not carry a specific publication. There are a lot of comics out there.

To find your local comic book store, check this list; and for one I can personally recommend because I've shopped there, albeit a while back, try this.

The above titles are listed with their Diamond order code in the first field, which may assist you in finding comics at your shop or having them order something for you they don't have in-stock. Ordering through a direct market shop can be a frustrating experience, so if you have a direct line to something -- you know another shop has it, you know a bookstore has it -- I'd urge you to consider all of your options.

If I didn't list your comic here, well, that's just one more thing I've done wrong this year.
