Douglas Mullins On The Subscriber Model PictureBox Is Using For Two Forthcoming Books posted May 15, 2009
Dan's move isn't unprecedented outside of comics. I remember the industrial band Einstürzende Neubauten did a thing where their fans paid in advance for them to produce a record (and i think they actually got to participate in decision) and I've also heard of films being made on this subscription basis. I've seen this talked about as a financial model to bring TV production to the Internet. You sell the idea of the show and get people to pay to watch it before it's produced, thus circumventing the whole network-studio system.
One way or another, I really really want those books and I'll pay for them whenever they want.
