Greg Vondruska on Gil Kane, Cover Artist
posted April 12, 2006

I'll agree that X-men cover isn't too attractive, but Holloway totally misses the point on Gil Kane. Kane was a superb draughtsman and artist in a time when artists did three pages a day, not one. Not only was Kane a spectacular artist and storyteller, but he was a visionary constantly striving with new projects and ideas. Look at "His Name is Savage" or "Blackmark". An artist publishing his own magazine or getting a comic the size of a paperback published! And in the late 60's and early 70's! Savage in particular, to me, is really out there and ahead of its time. Ultraviolent and it reads like a scifi movie from the early 80's. Can't draw as well as DC's top 10 artists? Please. I guess I take the dismissal of one of my hero's personally, but I'm not sorry. (And artiwise, I'm particularly fond of Gil's run on the Tarzan daily strip in '79. Because I like to see the work in black and white. And inked by him)
