Chris Lanier on The Blinking FBoFW Strips
posted August 2, 2006

That Lynn Johnston page is a great example of how a small detail can make something unintentionally and overwhelmingly creepy. Without the blinking, the panels are just snapshots of their particular moment. With the blinking, the panels are suddenly windows into places where the characters are trapped, paralyzed except for their eyelids, made to endure not only their car seat or suburban kitchen for an eternity -- but to suffer under the changeless burden of their casual thoughts and utterances, fixed like leaden weights above their heads. It out-Dante's Dante, in its modest way.
