Jim Kingman on Why the ‘70s Were Great
posted March 23, 2007

I thought the ongoing saga of Anna Nicole and Britney was too much... now they're picking on comics of the 1970s?
For those of us who started collecting comics in the 1970s, they will always be the most inspiring and influential comics decade of them all. I'm not being rational, or analytical, or debatable, I am going strictly with the gut and the heart.
The 1970s ruled.
Somebody wants ten good reasons? I'll give them ten good reasons:
Kamandi, The Last Boy on Earth. The Joker's startling comeback in Batman #251. Michael Fleisher and Jim Aparo's Spectre series in Adventure Comics. Binky Brown Meets the Holy Virgin Mary. C.C. Beck on the original Captain Marvel. Curt Swan and Murphy Anderson on Superman. Jim Starlin's Warlock. Steve Skeates and Jim Aparo on Aquaman in 1970. Any story featuring the Rutland Vermont Halloween Parade. DC finally giving recognition and bucks to Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, the creators of Superman, for Pete's sake.
And just in case a trump card must be dealt:
The 1970s gave us The Comics Journal and Archie Goodwin's tremendous body of work as an editor.
'Nuff said.
