Flipped!: David Welsh's Final Column
David P. Welsh
This will be my last Flipped column. I realized the other day that I've been writing it for five years, and I've enjoyed doing it. I've enjoyed the excuse to read a bunch of different comics and the opportunity to learn more about the category. What I've enjoyed most are the people I've encountered along the way who've offered feedback, guidance, contrary opinions, and conversation.
But half of a decade seems like long enough. I started writing about comics online as a hobby, and it feels like it's time to focus my energies on that kind of casual, conversational writing, which is why I got into this in the first place and is still the source of the most pleasure for me.
I'd like to thank
Comic World News for initially giving me the opportunity to write the column and to Tom Spurgeon for giving me space to continue. Tom has been as accommodating and supportive a host as one could want. And I'd like to thank everyone who's read these columns over the years.

David P. Welsh has loved comics since his parents first used
Archie and
Casper to sedate him during long trips in the family station wagon.
He's worked as a reporter and editor for daily and weekly newspapers, and later sold out for the glamorous world of public relations. Prior to relocating to
The Comics Reporter, he wrote his Flipped column for
Comic World News for just over three years. He's written articles on comics for print outlets and a variety of other web sites.
He lives in West Virginia, which he says has gotten a lot easier since the Starbucks and Barnes & Noble opened up.

Editor's Note -- I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to publish David's work over the last few years, and I am forever indebted to him for writing several Harlan Ellison vs. Fantagraphics news stories when my hands were tied by personal involvement. I learned a great deal from David, whose journey in manga I think mirrors a lot of similar explorations out there.
CR will be much, much poorer for Flipped not being here like clockwork every Monday at 1 PM.
That said, I couldn't be happier for him making a choice to focus his energies where he feels they best need focused, and towards what brings him greatest joy. I can't imagine a nicer, more professional person with whom to work, and wish David every happiness in the years to come. Please join me in
bookmarking his site if you haven't already. David, thank you. -- Tom Spurgeon]
