Initial Reax To CCI In SD Through 2015

Initial reaction to yesterday's announcement that Comic-Con International has extended its lease through 2015 seemed muted but generally positive, the damper effect perhaps coming from those weary of the long drawn-out process or those for whom "Comic-Con staying put" isn't as much of a story as it would have been had the show decided to move. Industry people and industry-focused outsiders at
The Beat still seemed worried about hotel issues. Ditto
commenters at Comic Book Resources. The
San Diego Union-Tribune has the local business community's reaction. Douglas Wolk
attempts to identify issues for the con over the next few years.
I ran just about everything I had -- and had to say --
last night. I'm glad it's staying in San Diego. As much as I like visiting LA, I think there's something very specific to San Diego that works for four days of immersing oneself in comics and other pop culture expressions that wouldn't be the same anywhere else. I also still have a very good time at that show, and find it extremely valuable in terms of meeting and hearing from certain artists and touching base with a lot of industry folk. As you get older and comics becomes a part of your life rather than your life, I think you value those peak experiences a little more and are loathe to see them swapped out for an entirely different set of experiences.
I'd like my hotel room to be cheaper, too, don't get me wrong. It's just that most of the complaints I hear I think would be taken care of if the comics industry stepped up and owned the event: threw its own parties, focused on selling and bringing attention to comics, brought their own journalistic agendas to the publishers rather than accepting what they're given, executed plans to engage the media on hand all weekend long, packed the Eisners with the intent of having as much fun as possible there, and just generally did its own thing. But that's just me.
