Submissions Deadlines Kick Off Fall

* a press release distributed yesterday indicates that James Sime and the gang at Isotope -- The Comic Book Lounge are accepting submissions for this year's 2010 Isotope Award For Excellence In Mini-Comics from now until midnight, October 1st. I guess the news has been up on the Isotope site for a while, and I totally missed it. Five copies need to be sent to Isotope (326 Fell St, SF, CA 94102) before the deadline. The winner must be present at the awards ceremony at the store the Saturday (10-16) of Alternative Press Expo.

The same release also announced this year's judges: Sime, Jann Janes, Brett Warnock, Kirsten Baldock and Ed Luce.

Past winners include Josh Cotter, Will Dinski, Max Riffner and Danica Novgorodoff.

* speaking of announcements I missed, the deadline for submission to the Prism Comics Queer Press Grant is September 15. The grant is a cash award to facilitate the publication of a winning lesbian, gay, bisexual and/or transgender comics work. Although the amount given is dependent on fund raising efforts, the last few grant have been at the $2000 level. All the information -- and an application -- can be found here.

Past winners of the grant include Ed Luce in 2009 for Wuvable Oaf and Steve MacIsaac in 2005 for Shiftlifter.

* while we're on the subject, the traditional Fall Xeric Grant deadline is September 30. That is a self-publishing grant designed mostly to aid younger cartoonists in the publication of an early, self-directed work. Its past winners include a long list of alt-comics regulars ranging from Jessica Abel to Karl Stevens.
