50 Comics Positives In 2012: Foundational Alt-Comics Publishers, Generation Three

image

It took years and years for some of us to grow accustomed to seeing foundational arts comics publishers like Drawn And Quarterly and Fantagraphics represented at shows by executive-level, post-founding hires like Peggy Burns and Eric Reynolds. 2012 was the first time I noticed such publishers at shows where their public face came from an even younger generation of invested employees. An infusion of career-minded, talented, hard-working young people at every company that can have them has to be good news, particularly as it comes during a time where those companies are as settled into a development path as they'll ever likely be -- it'll never be easy, but plans are made at least a season or two ahead, and people are willing to bet some element of their future lives on such companies being around at least a half-decade from now.
