Hugh Stewart on One of My Recent Batman Comments

Reading your recent comment on Batman:
"...you'd think from the comics end there would have been a follow-up to Year One that extended that work's appealing ground-level and straight-forward crime-oriented Batman into a Batman vs. Joker story or something similar. That makes perfect sense..."
There was something along these lines produced, although it wasn't a comic. DC commissioned a DVD of anime-style vignettes, called "Gotham Knight", similar to the one they produced for the Matrix sequel, wherein they paired American writers with Japanese animation studios. I haven't seen it, so I cannot speak to quality, but I believe it was supposed to follow Batman from fighting street-level hooligans to his first encounters with super-villains? Jog reviewed it, but to be honest I was more interested in the stuff about how poorly Warner Brothers seems to treat the Japanese animation studios they hire to put out these products than anything to do with the final product.
Here's a link to the DVD's website.
Jog's review, which is likely more entertaining.
