John Vest on Journey and Comics From 20-25 Year Ago
posted September 2, 2008

Journey still resonates with me 20-25 years after initially reading the series. I guess it is nostalgia for a particular time and place. When I think of Journey I remember filling out order forms at my comic shop with that title, Neil The Horse, Swamp Thing (the Alan Moore issues), Love & Rockets, American Flagg... Around '85 did seem like a peak in a way of comic shop books that came out on a regular schedule with independent titles that had elevated the medium to a certain extent - the comics published by Aardvark-Vanaheim, Renegade, Kitchen Sink, Comico, (the better) Eclipse, Pacific, and First titles.

I enjoyed Journey enough to the point of mail ordering the Many Happy Returns comic from a Canadian comic shop this summer for the new Journey story.

Remembering comics and comic shops from that era, it feels like what comic publishing has gained in art it has lost in spontaneity.
