Whereas no physical distribution system can be 100% accurate (going from printer to publisher to distributor to retailer, not to mention all the various stops in shipping hubs along the way) Diamond sends out to stores on Friday their invoice for the coming week.

Retailers can see what is shipping, how many copies they have ordered, and the invoiced amount (to facilitate C.O.D. agreements with retailers.)

Granted, it's not perfect, but it's the not a "Christmas morning"-styled scenario that many imagine Wednesdays to be.
