John Vest On Tales To Astonish #77
posted October 17, 2008

I dug out and reread my copy of Tales To Astonish #77 which I originally found at a second hand shop in the late 60's.

Gene Colan had a style that was especially affected by various embellishers on his work. Vince Colletta really made Gene Colan's art look weak both on the Sub-Mariner and later in the early issues of Captain Marvel. It's really evident when compared to how great Frank Giacola's inking fit Gene Colan's Iron Man stories in Tales Of Suspense.

It's also funny how different a Marvel character acted depending on the title. I always enjoyed the Sub-Mariner most as a supporting character in the early Fantastic Four issues when he was real arrogant and insulting. His speech has a much more sober tone in this story.
