TORONTO, Ontario -- The Beguiling, in association with Tundra Books and McClelland & Stewart are proud to welcome SHAUN TAN, author of the award-winning graphic novel The Arrival and concept artist on the Disney/Pixar film Wall-E, to Toronto. Tan will be visiting The Beguiling Books and Art to promote his newest work, the hybrid picture-book, prose, and graphic novel Tales From Outer Suburbia.

A parable on the immigrant experience, Tan’s The Arrival won The CBCA Picture Book of the Year, The NSW Premier's Book of the Year, and the Community Relations Commission Award, and was chosen as the best graphic novel of 2007 by the editor of the prestigious Comics Journal. His newest work, Tales from Outer Suburbia, is a lushly illustrated book for children of all ages, a collection of stories told through words and pictures that recall the humourous and bizarre aspects of a child’s life in the suburbs that we carry with us through our lives.

"The Arrival was a fantastic, profoundly moving book," said Christopher Butcher, manager of The Beguiling. "It found acceptance in the children's picture book, illustration, and graphic novel communities, and that speaks to a high level of craft and real emotion at the core of the story. We're really excited to be on board for the launch of his follow-up!"

Shaun Tan will be signing from 5pm to 7pm on October 28th at The Beguiling, 601 Markham Street, in Toronto’s historic Mirvish Village. Tales From Outer Suburbia will make its official Canadian debut at this signing event, and will be available for sale at the event.

"Few will remain unaffected by this timeless stunner." -- Publishers Weekly, starred review

TALES FROM OUTER SUBURBIA: Through a series of captivating and sophisticated illustrated stories, Tan explores the precious strangeness of our existence. He gives us a portrait of modern suburban existence filtered through a wickedly Monty Pythonesque lens. Whether it's discovering that the world really does stop at the end of the city's map book, or a family's lesson in tolerance through an alien cultural exchange student, Tan's deft, sweet social satire brings us face-to-face with the humor and absurdity of modern life.
