I have not a word or phrase to describe the feeling of experiencing self-aware work but rather a prefix: meta. "Postmodern," as your other letter-write it put it, works too. You can put them together in a sentence: "The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman is so meta that it's pre-Modernism Postmodernism!"
