John Vest On 25 Great Things About Being A Comics Fan
posted January 12, 2009

I enjoyed 25 Things About Being A Comics Fan and could relate to a number of the items - looking at some of the same comics over and over for decades, learning vocabulary, seeing favorite creators at conventions. My 92 year old mother saves the paper with Prince Valiant for me to clip when I visit each week.
One of the great things about being a comics fan is also acquiring interests in authors and subjects through comics. For me it was reading Robert E Howard and different pulp writers in the 70's after enjoying the adaptions by Roy Thomas. "The Religious Experience Of Philip K Dick" by R Crumb in Weirdo led me to track down every Philip K Dick novel that I could find. Last year new interests for me were Dawn Powell and Wilhelm Reich after finishing The Mural At The Waverly Inn and all five issues of Reich.
There's a wonderful sense of continuity with the enjoyment of comics during a lifetime.
