John Vest On Jeffrey Jones
posted January 19, 2010

I've enjoyed seeing the images and links posted this week from several late 70's/early 80's comics (Jeff Jones' Epic illustrated cover and Star*Reach issue, the illustrations from Rick Veitch's webpage). In the later 70's mainstream comics felt like they had aesthetically tanked (with a few exceptions like Steve Gerber's Howard The Duck to draw you to the spinner rack). The innovative comics seemed to be found around the edges (UG's, Star*Reach, early Heavy Metal, extended Howard Chaykin and Gray Morrow works outside the typical 32 page format, Epic Illustrated...). The scifi era around 30 years ago was one of those times in the medium when there was a sense of comics growing outside their boundaries.
