I'm pretty sure Blacksad was first put out in the US by ibooks, maybe '03 or '04? There's still an entry on Amazon for the second volume from '04, and ibooks folded after that. Your guess is the same as mine regarding its prospects, but this edition is the compilation of the first three editions its got a bigger spine and Dark Horse may have a better handle on things than ibooks did.
