John Tompkins On Return Of Mini-Con
posted June 12, 2010

I saw your site on Ben Towle's list of links and thought I would send some news your way!

I am a children's librarian at the Union West Regional Library in Indian trail, just outside of Charlotte. June 25 and 26 our library system will hold Return of Mini-Con! The two day event will be begin with day one at the Union West library where there will be an appearance by the Imperial 501st (aka Darth Vader's Fist) and the Rebel Legion's Blue Ridge Base! These fine people craft their own Star Wars costumes and make appearances for many different charitable organizations.

Also appearing on day one will be comics everyman Al Bigley whose work includes Batman TAS art, West Coast Avengers, Darkhawk, Sonic the Hedgehog, Geminar and more! Marcus Hamilton, the daily panel artist for Dennis the Menace and Dave McDonald, the creator of Hamster Sam and the Survival Island comic for end-of-grade testing will also be there. Jeremy Dale (GI JOE) and his wife, Kelly, Derek & Nikki Davis (The Ered Adventures), Troy Hasbrouck (writer and publisher of the Night comics for Jester Press), and more will be at tables creating skits for kids and answering questions. The day will also include an art challenge for kids to show off their comics prowess with judging by our pro artists and prizes being awarded.

Day two will be at the Monroe Library in downtown Monroe. Along with many of the artists from day one will be Tom Davidson (Circle City Tales), Brandon Padgett, Ben Towle (Amelia Earhart- Across This Broad Ocean) and more! The 501st will be there along with a presentation on graphic novels for educators, another art challenge and a costume contest.

Our library system chose to do a mini-con as a way of attracting kids to the library during the summer. Last year's mini-con brought in over 100 per hour, and this year we hope to exceed that amount. That will mean a lot of new readers for the summer and a lot of new library cards for the kids!

If you have any questions or need some pics from last year's event, or the jpeg ad we have, let me know!
Thanks for your consideration!
