Press Release

Cartoonists Bryan Lee O'Malley (Scott Pilgrim), Gene Yang (American Born Chinese), Hope Larson (Grey Horses) and Kevin Huizenga (Curses) will be signing from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on April 20, 2007 at Comix Experience, 305 Divisadero Street in San Francisco, California. The four cartoonists are all Special Guests for the Alternative Press Expo ("APE"), happening that weekend at the Concourse Exhibition Center.

"When I saw the announcement of their appearance at APE, I wanted to try and get at least one of them for a signing," said Jeff Lester, employee at Comix Experience. "They're all exceptional cartoonists, and creating work that both celebrates and transcends everyday life. Finally, because I couldn't settle on a single cartoonist, I thought I'd try to invite them all. As it turns out, they were all very receptive to the idea of a group signing."

Huizenga, Larson, O'Malley and Yang have all received tremendous amounts of attention in acclaim in the last few years, ranging from O'Malley's Scott Pilgrim series being optioned as the next film by Shaun of the Dead's director Edgar Wright to Yang's American Born Chinese being chosen as a 2006 National Book Award Finalist for Young People's Literature. Larson, a winner of the 2006 Ignatz Award for Most Promising New Talent, has also contributed illustrations to The New York Times, while Huizenga's most recent book, Curses, was chosen as one of the best comics of 2006 by Time Magazine. "Specializing in stories planted in America's suburban sprawl," wrote reviewer Andrew D. Arnold for Time, "Huizenga discovers the magical…hidden in plain site of 'average' lives."

"Yeah, I'm excited about having these four cartoonists sign at Comix Experience," said Comix Experience owner Brian Hibbs. "Throughout this store's eighteen year existence, we've done our best to bring new and dynamic talent to the attention of our customers, and Bryan, Hope, Gene and Kevin are exactly the type of 'new guard' cartoonists I'd like to spotlight as the comics medium attracts ever-greater attention from the national press and general public."

The signing on April 20th will mark the first time any of the cartoonists will have signed at Comix Experience.
