Comic Relief on Their Forthcoming Mike Carey Signing July 20 (PR)
posted July 19, 2007

Berkeley, CA--Mike Carey, the uncanny creative mind behind Vertigo's Lucifer and writer of Hellblazer, X-Men, Ultimate X-Men, and many original graphic novels, will be appearing at Comic Relief: The Comic Bookstore to promote the American publication of his first prose novel, "The Devil You Know" (Warner Books), on Friday, July 20, 2007 from 7 pm-9pm. Combining Carey's skillful plotting with his unique take on horror and the supernatural, Carey's novel is a page-turner that will be enjoyed by his established fans and by readers who have never picked up a comic book. Carey is also celebrating the recent release of several graphic novels and comic books, including The Re-Gifters (DC/Minx Comics), God Saves the Queen (DC/Vertigo), Crossing Midnight vol. 1 (DC/Vertigo), X-Men #200 (Marvel), and Faker #1 (DC/Vertigo).

Comic Relief, the country's most diversely stocked comic bookstore, is excited to continue to commemorate its 20th anniversary by hosting Mike Carey, who has emerged as one of the comic book industry's most clever and subtle writers in recent years. Rory Root, owner of Comic Relief, said, "I've been pushing Lucifer for years as one of the best books from Vertigo that not enough people know about. I'm excited to meet Mike and I'm pleased to see the path his career has taken."

Mike Carey gained his foothold in American comics writing for Caliber Comics, from whence his unique work was discovered by Vertigo, where he created one of the imprint's longest running titles, Lucifer, which garnered him several Eisner Award nominations. He recently completed a critically-acclaimed run on Vertigo's flagship title, Hellblazer, and continues to write his new series, Crossing Midnight, for Vertigo, and Ultimate Fantastic Four and X-Men for Marvel Comics. In addition to these ongoing series, he is also a prolific author of mini-series like "Faker" and original graphic novels; recently he has released "God Save The Queen" and "The Re-Gifters," and is currently anticipating the release of "Confessions of a Blabbermouth," a collaboration with his daughter, Louise.

"The Devil You Know," Carey's first full-length prose work, was released last year in England and is features Felix Castor, a exorcist by way of Chandler who takes one final job that refuses to make sense. Publisher's Weekly calls this first novel of a series an "ingeniously multi-layered tale," and proclaims Castor "the perfect hardboiled hero."

Comic Relief, located at 2026 Shattuck Ave (at University Ave., near the Downtown Berkeley Bart Station), is celebrating 20 years of having America's finest selection of graphic novels across all genres and hosting many of its greatest artists, writers, and creative iconoclasts. Comic Relief is thrilled to bring Mike Carey to the Bay Area on July 20 from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm. The store is open from 11am to 10 pm Monday through Saturday and 12 am to 8 pm Sunday, and can be reached by phone at (510) 843-5002, by email at [email protected], and can be found on the internet at www.comicrelief.net.
