News: Trondheim Wins Grand Prix at Stripdagen Haarlem
posted June 7, 2004

June 7 -- Lewis Trondheim, the award-winning cartoonist and European comics industry star whose work has been widely disseminated in the United States, was given the VPRO Grand Prix at the opening of this year's Stripdagen Haarlem. The award is given during the festival, which takes place every second year, to the person the organization designates the greatest working cartoonist. Along with a cash award worth about $3000, the winner helps the organizers plan an exhibit of his or her choosing for the next event. Trondheim has selected wordless comics for his theme, and his exhibit will be one of the main attractions of the 2006 festival.

The other Grand Prix finalists were Joann Sfar and Juanjo Guarnido, two other cartoonists whose success in Europe has begun to be replicated in North America. The jury of Dutch speaking comics experts that selected among the three was comprised of journalist Gerard Zeegers, Joy-Ann Bouwman of Donner Books, journalist Gert Jan Pos, and founder of Jessica Hummel.
