News: Sturm Announces CCS Opening in Vermont
posted July 21, 2004

July 21 -- With the launch of a web site and the distribution of an elaborately produced brochure, cartoonist James Sturm announced the opening of The Center for Cartoon Studies (CCS) in White River Junction Vermont for the Fall 2005 school season. Sturm intends for CCS to operate as a two-year professional school taught by professional cartoonists, writers and designers, with the production and distribution of "comics, graphic novels and other manifestations of the visual narrative" as its core principle.

Sturm had gone public about his desire to start a school as early as his Comics Journal feature interview in early 2003. He has since settled on a site: a downtown business building in White River Junction that used to hold a department store.

The school's press material named an impressive advisory board, drawing on Sturm's years of contacts within and without the North American art comics scene. They are: artist Steve Bissette, comics legend Will Eisner, this magazine's editor Gary Groth, cartoonist Sammy Harkham, film producer William Horber, cartoonist and agent and longtime publisher Denis Kitchen, author Scott McCloud, publisher Chris Oliveros, editor Diana Schutz, cartoonist Seth, cartoonist and editor Art Spiegelman, cartoonist, illustrator and editor R. Sikoryak, and Fantagraphics Publicity and Marketing Director Eric Reynolds.
