Tom Toles Wins The 2011 Herblock Prize
The Herb Block Foundation has announced that Tom Toles of the
Washington Post has won the 2011 Herblock Prize. Toles will take home a cash prize and trophy from a ceremony to be held in April. Toles was the cartoonist tapped to replace the legendary
Washington Post cartoonist after whom the foundation and prize is named when he passed away in 2001. He has won nearly all of cartooning's major awards, including a Pulitzer 21 years ago. He is the eight recipient of the award. Michael Cavna has his submissions portfolio
here.
From the outside looking in, the
Post's relationship with Toles seems to be one of the most fruitful if not the most fruitful, in editorial cartooning. He's supported by a thorough and rational web presence, he's doing good work, and I believe he's allowed to create work that comments on local issues (which if nothing else would play right into Toles' interest in transportation infrastructure) as well as national ones.
