50 Comics Positives In 2012: Jacob Zuma Caved On The Zapiro Lawsuit

That a sitting president would sue an editorial cartoonist was super-disturbing even by the recent standard of politicians applying pressure to publications throughout Africa and Europe; that Jacob Zuma finally dropped his lawsuit against Zapiro citing public pressures (as opposed to any sort of application of principle) has to be seen as good news, and should raise our esteem for how doggedly Zapiro fought every effort to stifle his voice. Ironically, the suit was one of several misguided efforts that helped make the cartoon in question the world's most famous of the last 25 years.
