Aunt Jemima Cartoon Upsets Readers
The newspaper industry publication of record
Editor & Publisher notes that
a cartoon accompanying an editorial in the Cleveland paper
Call And Post which portrays State Senator Nina Turner as a mammy figure has upset some of that paper's readers -- at least those that are supporters of Turner. The newspaper denies the caricature is hurtful. This kind of thing is usually less an incident of outright racism -- in this case the
Call And Post is one of the historical African-American newspapers still publishing and Walt Carr one of the older and respected cartoonists working that market -- than it is a shocking indictment of that editorial staff's collective knowledge of distressing slave and Reformation iconography on what would seem to be a mis-step on the cartoonist's part. I'm obviously working from a perspective removed from the intricacies involved here, though.
