Bundled, Tossed, Untied & Stacked: Publishing News
By Tom Spurgeon
* did we know there was
a complete collection of Spain's work coming out from Fantagraphics? I mean, it's not surprising, and it's certainly welcome, but I'm not sure I knew that. There's a lot of Spain to read that's interesting, and I'm as happy to have the previously reprinted stuff presented again as I am to see stuff I haven't seen yet. Everything Spain did was 27 percent more cool than its equivalent-by-genre-or-peer.
* here's another one I probably knew about and forgot:
Michael Kaluta's Starstruck work given the IDW deluxe publication treatment.
* I almost powered right past this, but here's
a PR-driven article about plans with the
Hellboy franchise for 2017. Those are generally solid and entertaining comics.
* hm, Daniel Clowes and Jaime Hernandez are cited
here as comparable artists, at least in terms of approach. One the one hand, no pressure! On the other, that book will have my attention.
* finally, one reason I don't do exclusives is because I don't think the media apparatus for comics is expansive enough to encompass the word getting out if it's given to one of the many members of the press. I don't remember
this Gene Luen Yang book announcement at all, for instance, and that sounds like a work worth noting. 2018!
