Cartoon Claimed as Straw on Camel’s Back as San Francisco Official Resigns

San Francisco Housing Authority Director Gregg Fortner
tendered his resignation to Mayor Gavin Newsom late last week, citing a
San Francsico Chronicle cartoon, a cartoon he described as demeaning, as the straw the broke the camel's back, both in its publication and what he termed an attitude around city hall that allowed people to see officials in that light. Although he doesn't name the cartoon or the cartoonist, Fortner supplies the date September 1, which when going through the archives of all cartoonists used by the
Chronicle makes me suspect
this effort by George Russell. Although one may suspect that this is a bit of hyperbole rather than a searing examination of actual causes, it's worth noting that an editorial cartoon can still have a powerful effect on those portrayed.
