Comics Conventions, Awards Updates

* this weekend sees what I have to figure is the last notable small press show of the year: the free, one-day Brooklyn Comics and Graphics Festival. They're splitting the show between three proximate locations and into marketplace, programming and musical entertainment tracks, and they seem to have attracted some of the really fine arts comics publishers out there, starting with Drawn and Quarterly. There's a new Gary Panter mini for sale, and the guest list is full of heavy-hitters. I wish I were going.

* so I guess the choice of basic analysis for Gareb Shamus moving his Chicago comics show off of dates Reed and Lucasfilm have selected for a massive Star Wars-related show they're doing is either that a) Shamus is being a gentleman in this case after squaring off against Reed in many other circumstances, or b) Shamus wants no part of competing for a certain kind of a fan or guest with a Star Wars show happening somewhere in the U.S. on the same date. I think most folks suspect "b" is the case, although I've never thought of Shamus' shows as so dependent on Star Wars-related activity that they'd really be losing a lot of fans having to make a choice between one or the other. A slew of smaller issues might be worth noting: the fact that Rosemont could handle such a move doesn't speak well for their convention-booking state right now, that Reed is making an even fuller commitment to fan-driven conventions -- their pop culture group -- with such a show, and that Baltimore Con may feel some heat of Shamus' show moving one week closer.

* the Eisner Awards, which aren't a convention but take place in the warm embrace of one, has posted its submissions information for the 2010 iteration of the program. The deadline is March 8, but it's always better to get these things done before they sneak up on you. The Eisners has a juried nominations process that historically depends on these submissions for a lot of their deliberative work.
