CR Week In Review

imageThe top comics-related news stories from January 2 to January 8, 2016:

1. The long-list nominations come out for the FIDB Grand with nary a female creator included. A boycott is underlined, more than a third of the selected creators drop out, a defensive stance is taken with assertion that a sixth grader can flip over and finally the nominations are all free and everyone can vote for whomever they want.

2. The one-year anniversary of the Charlie Hebdo murders is honored, with an avalanche of thinkpieces, a deeply unfortunate misspelling on a plaque, even more thinkpieces, but only a single instance of mind-bending violence.

3. Single-digit number of days into the new year, and two book-of-year-2016 candidates start to rumble to life: January's Rosalie Lightning; March's Patience.

Winner Of The Week
Mark Waid.

Loser Of The Week
FIBD's Franck Bondoux. I sympathize with anyone running a festival, particularly one of the giant ones -- I can only imagine how hard it is -- but the tone and nature of the festival's response to criticism of the grand prix nominations list was wholly unpleasant and rightly criticized.

Quote Of The Week
"Open to all women who make/have made comics. Let's set the record straight! Post your name and a self-portrait. It's that simple. Please invite a friend!" -- Many Many Many Women Who Make Comics.
