Erik Abild Sorensen, 1918/1919-2008

imageEric Abild Sorensen, a longtime staff cartoonist at Jyllands-Posten and one of the cartoonists behind twelve caricatures of the Prophet Muhammed that were later cited as the cause of riots and political turmoil in early 2006 and again in 2008, has passed away. His former editor Flemming Rose notes that Sorensen worked at the paper for 47 years, the last 30 as a staff cartoonist. Sorensen's contribution to the suite of cartoons was noteworthy because it did not include a picture of Muhammed at all, only an abstract drawing and a political statement. The fact that folks were still offended by the cartoon indicates a slightly different line of reasoning that that advanced by both sides as the cause for the objections and resulting turmoil. Sorensen also received some attention after the controversy began for basically stating that he didn't fear repercussions due to his advanced age and all the things he had already seen in life. He was 89 years old.
