Frank Modell, RIP
There's a lengthy and amusing obituary at New York Times.
It occurs to me we are in the midst and maybe moving to the end of losing that whole generation of super-solid gag cartoonists that worked for
The New Yorker in the 1960s through the 1980s, the end of the Shawn era. That's always extra-sad, like that period when there seemed to be so many Golden Age comic book creators passing away. Like
MAD, the early days with
New Yorker cartooning were so bright that we forget to see the consistent quality of the publication in later periods.
