Go, Read: Zak Sally On Popeye

The musician, cartoonist and publisher Zak Sally has a really nice piece up on Thimble Theatre and Fantagraphics' new, astounding-looking six-volume series that I think bears focused attention. Sally does as good as job as anyone with these kind of introductory-to-an-artist articles, and there's plenty of detail work and observations for more learned fans as well.

I think post-Popeye Thimble Theatre was a top five comic of all time, and, as Sally points out, its virtues are lusty, visceral and almost immediately apparent.
