Magdy El Shafee Speaks Out On Decision That His Metro Infringes Public Decency

In a brief interview that either originated with or was reprinted by the Sydney Morning-Herald, Egyptian cartoonist Magdy El Shafee speaks to the November 22 decision that his graphic novel Metro, the first Egyptian comics effort aimed at an adult audience, "infringed public decency." The 2006 book was banned from further sale and distribution under that decision and Shafee and his publisher were fined approximately $1000 (USD) apiece. Shafee claims that any minor salacious details in the book's narrative aren't the source of concern and that the book's focus on public corruption is what has officials worried.

The story also mentions that Shafee is a chemist who works in marketing for a pharmaceuticals company, something I hadn't known.
