Malaysian Cartoonist Charged For Writing Satirical, Onion-Like Blog Post

The Malaysian Insider reports that cartoonist, Malay Mail lifestyle section editor and blogger Irwan Abdul Rahman was charged earlier today in Sessions Court in Petaling Jaya for publishing false information in the form of a satirical blog post.

The article in question, entitled "TNB to sue WWF over earth hour" (TNB is Malaysia's largest electric utility) apparently came to the attention of the appropriate government agency in the first half of 2010 -- an April post by Rahman discusses his attempt to defuse the situation, indicated he had removed the post, and asked others to do so as well. You can read his account of going to court here.

A quick look at Rahman's site reveals a number of clearly satirical posts, such as a mosquito being suggested for designation as the national bird, so I think he would clearly take the home if this were being tried in the Court Of Reasonable People. How it adjudicates in the court it's in, we'll have to see. The case is scheduled for November 24.

I have no idea if this is the same Rahman
