Marvel Set To Join Disney December 31

This is one of those "there it is" stories where you just kind of point at someone's republication of the Press Release and nod your head sagely, but to say it out loud Marvel and Disney yesterday set the date for the special meeting where the vote will take place that will make the former part of the latter and make a lot of board members that much richer. If you want the super-nerd merit badge by trying to figure out what this might mean in the context of the media's 2010, you find easily some analysis in place like this which kind of pat the deal on the head at a distance by suggesting deals of that quality are rare enough there are not likely to be a ton of them forthcoming.

imageI hate pointing this out, as high-end corporate PR is one of those professions in America where they always ask you to appreciate the wrapping as well as the present, but Marvel's scheduling of announcements has seemed to me kind of immaculate in that scary, steamrolling way. They announced the merger during a summer dead period where it could dominate the news for a few days and at a time it would give them momentum to pass through a bad quarterly report right at the nadir between potentially profitable film-driven cycles, the first major event of the merger will be sure thing of sure things profits-wise Iron Man 2, and they even released super-pretty pictures for all the gosh-shucks bloggers and Marvel-friendly media analysts out there from a planned park in Dubai in case something weird popped up about the latest release or, perhaps, just to put sparklies on the whole affair.

In other news, the actress Natalie Portman seems to suggest that Marvel is phoning her from an office in Asgard. I would not be surprised.

Update: Kevin Melrose wrote in to inform me that the Marvel images seem to have seeped out through fan channels rather than from Marvel, which kind of damages my view of Marvel as Evil PR Geniuses... or is that what they want me to think?
