Mike Cotton’s Last Day At Wizard Was April 29

The longtime Wizard editorial employee Mike Cotton, arguably the publication's biggest figure over the last decade, announced via twitter that he had left the company after 11 years of working there. In a follow-up posting at his site, Cotton notes that he was on point during the magazine's recent transition from monthly print magazine to weekly web offering. Although the exact nature of his next move is unknown, there may be a clue in Cotton doing a piece for Rich Johnston's Bleeding Cool that ran yesterday, and a quick survey of comments directed back at Cotton through the twitter announcement gives an idea as to the breadth of his industry contacts.

The loss of yet another key employee may have left Wizard, a major source of first-hires for the entire comics industry, with a single editorial employee. I can't see this as anything but yet another blow for the publishing side of what the company does. Even with Cotton providing continuity and all of the administrative and publicity advantages secured by the print magazine's one-time success, Wizard's digital magazine has yet to make a discernible impression of any kind on the industry coverage landscape.
